The Andromeda Galaxy, also known as M31, is the closest spiral galaxy to the Milky Way and the largest galaxy in the Local Group of galaxies. It is located about 2.537 million light-years away from Earth in the constellation Andromeda. Like the Milky Way, Andromeda has a spiral structure with a bright central bulge and several spiral arms containing stars, gas, and dust. The galaxy contains over a trillion stars, more than twice the number in the Milky Way. Andromeda and the Milky Way are moving toward each other at a speed of about 110 kilometers per second and are expected to collide and merge in roughly 4.5 billion years, forming a new, larger galaxy. Andromeda is visible to the naked eye from Earth on clear nights and has been studied for centuries due to its proximity and size.
