Swami Vivekananda, born as Narendra Nath Datta on January 12, 1863, in Kolkata, was one of India’s greatest spiritual leaders and reformers. A devoted disciple of Sri Ramakrishna Paramhansa, he dedicated his life to spreading the ideals of Vedanta, Yoga, and universal brotherhood. His famous address at the World Parliament of Religions in Chicago in 1893, beginning with “Sisters and Brothers of America,” introduced the richness of Indian spirituality to the West and emphasized the unity of all religions. He founded the Ramakrishna Mission in 1897, guided by the motto “Atmano mokshartham jagat hitaya cha”—for one’s own salvation and the welfare of the world. Deeply devoted to Goddess Kali, Swami Vivekananda believed that serving humanity is the highest form of worship. Through his speeches and writings compiled in The Complete Works of Swami Vivekananda, he inspired countless people to discover the divinity within themselves. He attained Mahasamadhi at Belur Math on July 4, 1902, at the young age of 39, leaving behind an everlasting legacy of strength, faith, and spiritual awakening.
