The Ramakrishna Mission was founded by Swami Vivekananda in 1897 to spread the spiritual ideals and teachings of his guru, Sri Ramakrishna Paramhansa. The Mission’s headquarters is located at Belur Math, near Kolkata, on the banks of the Ganga River. Its guiding motto, “Atmano mokshartham jagat hitaya cha”, means “For one’s own salvation and for the welfare of the world.” This beautifully expresses the dual goal of individual spiritual growth and selfless service to humanity. The Mission works through numerous branches in India and abroad, engaging in activities like education, health care, rural development, disaster relief, and spiritual teaching.
Inspired by Ramakrishna’s message that “Service to man is service to God,” the Mission remains non-political and focuses on the upliftment of society through compassion and wisdom. Publications such as The Vedanta Kesari and Prabuddha Bharata continue to spread the message of Vedanta and universal brotherhood. The Ramakrishna Mission stands today as a beacon of peace, harmony, and selfless service, carrying forward the timeless ideals of Sri Ramakrishna and Swami Vivekananda.
