Q. In which Amendment to the Preamble of the Indian Constitution was the word ‘Secular’ introduced ?
The 42nd Constitutional Amendment Act, 1976 (often called the “Mini Constitution”) introduced the words “Socialist” and “Secular” into the Preamble of the Indian Constitution.
Before this amendment, the Preamble described India as a Sovereign Democratic Republic.
After the amendment, it became: “Sovereign Socialist Secular Democratic Republic.”
This amendment was passed during the Emergency period under Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.
