The Scheme of Panchayati raj which was first adopted in Rajasthan on the 2nd October, 1959 was the result, of the recommendations of the Balavantrai Mehta Committee. In 1956, the Committee was formed to study the working of the Community Development programmes and suggest remedies for removal of defects therein. This Committee is sometimes known as the committee on the Democratic Decentralization.
