Panchayati Raj is a system of local self-government in India. It has three tiers at the village, taluk/Mandal, and district levels. The panchayat is the village-level institution while the taluka/Mandal and district are intermediate and upper-tier respectively.

The main objectives of Panchayati Raj are

(i) to decentralize power to the grassroots level so that people can participate in the planning and execution of development programs;
(ii) to ensure greater transparency and accountability in the functioning of government; and
(iii) to provide greater opportunities for people’s participation in the democratic process.

Panchayati Raj has been successful in empowering the grassroots and ensuring their participation in the planning and execution of development programs. It has also helped to improve the quality of life of the people by providing them with better access to basic amenities and services.
