A body of land surrounded by water on three sides is called a peninsula. The word comes from the Latin paene insula, meaning “almost an island. The world’s largest peninsula is Arabia, covering about 1 million square miles (2.6 million square kilometres). It is bounded on the west by the Red Sea, on the south by the Gulf of Aden and the Arabian Sea, and on the east by the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman.”
